This is a 1917 New Wonder cornet that does not have a model number stamped on it, but it is from the 80A family. This cornet has Conn's #2 bore, .464, so likely it is a 4A or 6A. This cornet features original gold plating and has wonderful engraving the full length of the bell.
Unlike many Conns of this era, it has the mechanism intact to quickly convert from Bb to A. If you pull the third slide out gently the first and second slides also pull out in correct proportion to allow the cornet to play in A with no other adjustments. The mechanism operates smoothly, as do the valves, slides and micro-tuner.
It comes with a Conn New Wonder mouthpiece, but no other accessories or a case.
There is evidence of some solder repair on the micro tuner but it functions well. There is also some discoloration of the gold plating in a few locations, which is likely tarnish on the silver plating underneath the gold plating. Rather than risk damage to the original gold plating, no polishing has been done on these areas.
The plating on the valves does not show any major wear and the valve compression is very good. The valve guides are a bit unusual and are somewhat difficult to seat, but once in place seem to be functioning well.
This is another instrument from the Rick Baptist collection. Although Rick does not have any personal history with this horn, it is one of many collectible instruments acquired during his long career.
