This is a 1922 Conn 16A Wonder Slide Cornet. This is being sold as a part of a very nice collection and this is the first of this model that we've ever seen. There is a photo of one on the Conn Loyalist site, but this one comes with the original case and a guide that can be attached to help with the slide positions.
This "cornet" is in very good original condition with matching serial numbers as shown in the photos. The original case is in very good condition and it comes with a NY Bach 18C cornet mouthpiece. The only thing missing from the kit is a apparently a mute.
There are not signs of any repairs or damage and the slide operates smoothly.
The Wonder slide cornet Weighs 1 1/2 lbs, is 21 1/4" long and has a 4" bell. The 16A is the low pitch version, the 17A is the high pitch version. The name "Wonder" was dropped sometime in the late 1920's. It was produced between at least 1904 and 1927.
What Conn said in the 1920's:
In vaudeville and jazz orchestras this slide cornet is used to produce startling glissando and novelty effects. It is also being used effectively in brass bands, for little tots, as a sort of trombone substitute.
