1935 Olds Catalog

1934 Olds Military model Bb cornet

SOLD

This is an Olds Military model cornet with a hand hammered bell and an LM bore in very good original condition.  The lacquer appears to be darkened original lacquer and all parts are original to the cornet.  All slides and valves operate smoothly and valve compression is  good.  There is some air leakage, but we do not detect that it impacts how well this cornet plays.   The bell flare has had some professional dent work and although the dents have been removed, there are some scars in the brass as shown in the photos.

Of note, this cornet uses a traditional shank cornet mouthpiece.  The mouthpiece receiver appears to be original to the horn, so likely Olds had not yet started using larger shank cornet mouthpieces.  We have inspected another slightly later Military cornet and found the same style original receiver.

The Olds Military trumpet and cornet models first appear in a catalog that is estimated to have been published in 1933.  There are several Military trumpets that appear in the Olds Register in the 800 to 1400 serial number range, but the first Military cornet recorded is serial number 1506.  This cornet is the next lowest serial number military cornet with serial number 1520, likely made in the first batch of this new model.   Olds had a pattern of introducing the trumpet version of a model initially with the cornet version following a year or more later.

The Military cornet has a unique wrap from other Olds cornets and is a rare Olds model with a "reversed" construction tuning slide.  This model has a main and secondary tuning slide.  There is no adjustment on the third valve slide, but there is an underslung push rod on the secondary tuning slide which allows for tuning adjustment on any note.  While it could be ordered with a standard bell, the hand hammered bell is most closely associated with the Military model.

Comes with the original case showing some wear and the original lyre.  No mouthpiece is included
