This is a 1940 Martin Handcraft Committee Bb trumpet in excellent original condition, complete with case. In original condition with the very nice case, this is certainly a desirable find for a collector; however, as a player, this horn has all the qualities that make this era of Committee the most desirable.
The original lacquer is mostly present with some areas of missing lacquer as shown. There is not any evidence of dent or repair work with the exception of the 2nd valve slide crook, which has some small dents and signs of previous repair. Given the age of this trumpet and the possibility that the brass has weakened in this crook from past work, we think it best to leave this original crook as is. The leadpipe has some lacquer wear and some minor corrosion, but if kept clean should have plenty of life in it. Valve compression and action is excellent and the slides move smoothly. This horn is typical #2 bore, which is .451 or medium bore.
These early Handcraft Committees had traditional waterkeys and did not have the same iconic 3rd slide push rod as later Committees. These early models also had a significant amount of nickel-silver on the slides and mouthpiece receiver, which was only found on the later Deluxe models. This trumpet also has a third slide stop rod, which isn't common on Committees, but we've seen this on another Committee just 60 serial numbers away from this one and it has all indications of being original to this trumpet.
You'd be hard pressed to find a better playing vintage Committee that is in such great original condition.
