1943 Olds Super Recording Trumpet SN 11539

1943  Olds Super Recording trumpet

SOLD

This is a 1943 Olds Super Recording.  This is earliest version of the  Super Recording. The Super Recording represents the pinnacle of Olds craftsmanship. The Super Recording was known at the time as the "Super Olds Recording Model." Prior to this model, the Super had been the model at the top of the Olds lineup. Thus, this new model built on the reputation of the Super. The Super Recording had three different design phases during its approximately 10 year production run. This represents the original design from the late 1930's to early 40’s and is the rarest, and to many Olds aficionados, the best.

It seems odd to think that this trumpet might have been made in the midst of WWII, but recent discoveries confirm that Olds did make instruments during WWII, many under contract with the US Military.  Whether this was made for military or civilian use is not known.  1943 is the year assigned based on the most recent serial number estimates, but they are only estimates, so this could have been made just before the start of WWII in 1941.

More information about this rare early Super Recording model can be found in the 1941 Olds Catalog posted below.

This has the "dual leaderpipe" that is referenced in Olds literature. It has a brass leadpipe with a nickel-silver sleeve that is placed over the receiver and leadpipe. It also has the wider nickel silver tone ring that is only found on pre-war models. These early models have "Super Olds Recording Model" hand engraved into the tone ring. Other than the tone ring engraving, there is no engraving on the bell.

This trumpet is being sold for someone who no longer actively plays and is liquidating his collection.   The trumpet in in very good original condition with some scratches and wear to the original lacquer and one small dent in the top part of the bell crook that is shown in the photos.  When acquired a number of years ago, this trumpet was sent to Charlie Melk for general servicing and a valve  refit/replate.   A receipt for this work will be provided to the buyer.   The trumpet has been played very little since this work was done, so the valves are still in the break in period.   The third slide stop rod was missing one of the end caps, so a replica stop rod assembly was acquired.  The original parts with the one missing cap are included with the trumpet.

This trumpet is clean inside and out. All slides are smooth. Valve action and compression is very good.    Engraving is sharp and clear.

Does not come with a case.
