1945 Olds Super Recording Cornet SN 14549

1945 Olds Super Recording cornet

This is a 1945 Olds Super Recording cornet. This cornet was likely made near the end of WWII or just after the war. Olds serial numbers are hard to pin down, but recent discoveries confirm that Olds did make instruments during the war, many for sale to the US Military.

The Super Recording represents the pinnacle of Olds craftsmanship. The Super Recording was known at the time as the "Super Olds Recording Model." Prior to this model, the Super had been the model at the top of the Olds lineup. Thus, this new model built on the reputation of the Super. The Super Recording cornet is much rarer than the trumpet counterpart.

More information about this rare Super Recording model can be found in the 1941 Olds Catalog posted below.

This early post-war model does not have RECORDING engraved on the bell flare but RECORDING has been added in block style engraving just below Super Olds on the tone ring. Later versions of this model had RECORDING engraved on the bell flare.

This cornet is being sold for the current owner, who has owned this cornet since the early 1960’s. It has been in storage for decades but has recently been cleaned and serviced with new springs, felts and corks. The finish is quite worn and there are a number of shallow dents in the leadpipe and crooks. All parts are original with matching serial numbers.

This cornet is clean inside and out. All slides are smooth. Valve action and compression is quite good. This cornet could be played as it is, or would be a great candidate for restoration since the valves are good and all parts are present.

This cornet has the original receiver which requires a larger shank mouthpiece or one of the other options that are described here.

The original Olds 3 large shank mouthpiece is included.

The case is also original and shows it’s age, but is still functional.
