1946 Chicago Benge Bb trumpet SOLD

1946 Chicago Benge Bb trumpet

SOLD

This is a Chicago Benge, made when Elden Benge was still making handmade trumpets, which were still very much in the model of the French Besson trumpet.  This trumpet was recently acquired from the family of the original owner in Chicago, so possibly  it was purchased directly from Elden Benge.

Medium large (.460) bore with all original parts, which is quite rare for a Chicago Benge.  Valve compression is very good and this trumpet still wears most of its original lacquer. Each valve spring barrel is stamped with the serial number.  All slides are smooth and this is a great playing example of the Chicago Benge era.  Engraving is sharp and clear.

There are a few areas of lacquer wear on the leadpipe, and the concern with Benge leadpipes is always red rot, but the lacquer wear does not general have the circular appearance or pinkish tinge of red rot and the inside of the pipe is clean and clear.   However, even though the inside of the pipe is clear, one or more of these areas of wear are likely the start of red rot.  If the leadpipe is kept clean, it will likely provide service for decades;  however, ultra sonic cleaning should be avoided since it can damage weakened areas of brass.

Comes with a case showing some wear but still fully functional with no vintage odor.  Early Benge cases were not labeled, but this looks similar to cases we've seen with other Chicago Benge trumpets.
