1947 Olds Super Recording trumpet
We wrote a general description of the Super Recording model a few years back and it is often copied by others, but this is our original description, so if it sounds familiar, it is because others have flattered us by copying it!
The Super Recording represents the pinnacle of Olds craftsmanship and was the horn that attracted legendary trumpet virtuoso Rafael Mendez to become an Olds artist and later to lend his name to the Mendez model. The Super Recording was actually known at the time as the "Recording model Super trumpet." Prior to its introduction in Olds lineup, the Super was the top model. Thus the new model built on the reputation of the Super. The Super Recording had three different design phases during its approximately 10 year production run. This represents the middle of the three phases and offers the dual leaderpipe that was not found on later models.
The "dual leaderpipe" that is referenced in Olds literature is a brass leadpipe with a nickel silver sleeve that is placed over the receiver and leadpipe. It also has the same brass tone ring that is on the very early post war Supers. In addition to the tone ring, this version has the word RECORDING running lengthwise down the bell tube and into the bell flare. Engraving is sharp and crisp. These older Super Recordings also have lightweight bodies (compared to later models). Supers and Super Recordings after 1947 have thicker walled brass tubing.
This Super Recording was recently acquired from the daughter of the original owner. It was used during Army band service for a period of time, but it is is not known if it was military issue or privately owned. Regardless, it is in very good original condition. The lacquer shows some wear, but at least 75% of the original lacquer remains. There were a couple of small dents in the slide crooks that we had removed, but other than than, there is no evidence of any damage or past repairs.
All parts are original to the horn. The valves appear to be original as well with a small bit of plating loss at the bottom of the first valve piston. Valve compression is very good and no valve work is required.
Engraving is sharp and clear. This trumpet is in excellent cosmetic and playing condition.
It came to us with a non-original case, so we've paired it with a period correct Lifton case that was provided with Super Recordings of this era. Likely this case was used with a Super because there is some wear where the valve casing rests that is in a slightly different location than where this Super Recording resets, however, this case provides a snug fit for this horn. Also included is the original Olds 3 mouthpiece with the art deco engraving from this era.
