1947 Olds Super Recording trumpet
We wrote a general description of the Super Recording model a few years back and it is often copied by others, but this is our original description, so if it sounds familiar, it is because others have flattered us by copying it!
The Super Recording represents the pinnacle of Olds craftsmanship and was the horn that attracted legendary trumpet virtuoso Rafael Mendez to become an Olds artist and later to lend his name to the Mendez model. The Super Recording was actually known at the time as the "Recording model Super trumpet." Prior to its introduction in Olds lineup, the Super was the top model. Thus the new model built on the reputation of the Super. The Super Recording had three different design phases during its approximately 10 year production run. This represents the middle of the three phases and offers the dual leaderpipe that was not found on later models.
The "dual leaderpipe" that is referenced in Olds literature is a brass leadpipe with a nickel silver sleeve that is placed over the receiver and leadpipe. It also has the same brass tone ring that is on the very early post war Supers. In addition to the tone ring, this version has the word RECORDING running lengthwise down the bell tube and into the bell flare. Engraving is sharp and crisp. These older Super Recordings also have lightweight bodies (compared to later models). Supers and Super Recordings after 1947 have thicker walled brass tubing.
This horn is in very good original condition. It is rare to find a Super Recording in such good original condition. It has lost much of its original lacquer, but there are no indications of past dent or solder work. The horn has a great overall vintage appearance.
Valves appear to be original and compression is very good. There is some plating wear to the second valve piston, but this does not affect the compression which is very good.
Typically, we will have a Super Recording restored and/or have the valves refit if they are not in great condition, but many collectors/players would rather choose their own restoration process and/or keep a horn original. This one is in such good original physical condition that we offer it without any level of restoration other than basic cleaning. There is a small dent in the bell tail.
Does not come with a case.
