This is a 1954 Olds Recording cornet in very good cosmetic and playing condition. It has been silver plated in the past and the plating is very good with minimal wear. The engraving is sharp and clear. There are a few areas on the leadpipe and the slides where you can detect minor imperfections under the plating. Rather than over buff to obtain a perfectly smooth surface, whoever did the plating work erred on the side of retaining as much metal as possible. Other than these minor imperfections under the plating, there are no signs of any dents, damage or abuse.
The Recording model has the offset middle valve and the Re-O-loy bell and leadpipe, more commonly known as "red brass" for the higher copper content; the spring loaded third valve trigger; and the distinctive custom engraving.
This cornet was made in the last year of manufacturing in Los Angeles before the move to Fullerton. It has the original mouthpiece receiver, so it does require a larger shank "Olds" cornet mouthpiece. The previous owner used a Curry 2BBC mouthpiece with the "O" shank and this is provided with this cornet. This mouthpiece has a deep cup and is made specifically for brass band use.
It has the same spring loaded 3rd slide trigger as found on Recording trumpets. Some later Recording cornets have a trigger which operates the main tuning slide, but this one operates the third valve slide.
This cornet clean inside and out. All slides are smooth.
Engraving is sharp and clear
Valves are in excellent condition and have very good compression. Possibly the valves were replated with the cornet was silver plated.
Does not come with a case.
