This is a 1970 Conn Connstellation 38B Bb trumpet. The Connstellation was played by many famous players, including Maynard Ferguson, Snooky Young, Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan, Chet Baker and Cat Anderson in the 1950's and '60's . The 38B is the larger bell version of this horn. 1970 was the last year for Conns to be made in Elkhart Indiana, so this is one of the last Connstellations made in Elkhart.
Here is what Conn said in the 1966 catalog:
"Here is the large bore feel that top artists prefer. Produces six to 12 decibels more sound for the same player effort. The finest of mechanical superiority. First valve trigger. Micro-finish mouthpipe. Electro-D bell and mouthpipe. Undercut slides. Length 21½". Bell 5 1/8".
Clear lacquer is placed over nickel plated horns and with very few exceptions, the lacquer does not hold up well over time. Most Connstellations of this era have a rough appearance due to chipping and pealing of the lacquer. This particular instrument is in excellent condition very minimal wear to the lacquer. Comes with the original case in excellent condition with the original gold plated Connstellation 7B-N mouthpiece and the original paperwork.
Valves are fast and smooth with very good compression. Slides operate smoothly. No dents, damage or signs of past repairs. This horn was recently acquired by a collector who had it in a private collection for much of its life, so based on its condition, likely it was played very little by its original owner and then kept in the case for many years.
