This is a 1912 Lyon and Healy American Make cornet. Lyon and Healy may be best known for a variety of other musical instruments and it's imported brasses; however beginning in 1899, they manufactured the "Own Make" line in Chicago. In 1912, the name of this line was changed to American Make, with the engraving abbreviated to "Am'n Make" on the bell.
This cornet comes with the original case, mouthpiece, two main tuning slides and a longer tuning bit. There is a small piece that inserts into the leadpipe and then either the mouthpiece or the long tuning bit can be inserted. The mouthpieces seats well, but perhaps due to the length of the tuning bit, it tends to move a bit under pressure.
As noted, there are two tuning slides of different length . This cornet was made during the area of transition from high pitch to low pitch, so the combination of tuning slides and leadpipes allow for both high pitch and low pitch in Bb and A. Using the high pitch set up, the cornet can also play in low pitch key of C, but there is only one set of valve slides, so likely this was not intended when this cornet was made.
The plating is original and in very good condition. The overall condition of this cornet is good with and the valve compression is also good, even with some wear to the plating of the pistons. The bore measures .465.
