This is a 1941 Los Angeles Olds Super that is in original condition with all original parts. It has a fair amount of lacquer wear as shown in the photos.
This is a somewhat rare late pre-war or early war-time production model. We have labeled it as a 1941 model, but it could just as easily been made in early 1942. What is rare about this trumpet is that is is one of three that have been identified in the 11,000 serial number range that have angled knurling on the finger buttons, top caps and bottom caps. From its introduction a few years before this trumpet was made, all Super trumpets had a new style of finger buttons, top caps and bottom caps unlike other Olds models, but at least three Supers in the 11,000 serial number range have the more traditional angled knurling. All three have the full serial number stamped on the inside of the top caps (as this one does) which authenticates the original parts to the trumpet. This is purely cosmetic, but makes for an interesting and collectible instrument.
This and other design elements of the Super trumpet are highlighted in our online article, Super Evolution
These early Supers are considered some of the best Supers ever made. This is a lightweight horn.
The early Olds literature indicated that the Super was made only in one bore size, but then several bore sizes were made... M, LM, and SYM. The SYM bore was .462 and although this trumpet does not have a bore designation, it is a .462 bore. Shortly after this horn was made, Olds standardized future Supers with a .460 ML Bore.
This trumpet clean inside and out. All slides are smooth.
Engraving is sharp and clear. Matching serial numbers on the valve spring barrels, valve stems and top caps.
The valve plating on this trumpet appears to be original. The valve compression and action is good, but this trumpet seems to perform best with heavier oil and we will include a bottle of Hetman's #3.
Comes with what may be the original case, which is definitely a pre-war Olds case in good condition.
