1941 Olds Super trumpet

This is a 1941  Los Angeles Olds Super that is in good original condition.   Not much is known of its history, but  it was purchased by a collector a few years ago from the grand-daughter of a long-time owner in Ohio.  After cleaning it up, it was discovered that "Charles Richard Peek" is neatly engraved below the bell flare.  You hardly notice the engraving, but it is a bit of history.     

The trumpet appears to have original parts with matching serial numbers stamped in various locations.  Little of the original lacquer was remaining so it has been gently polished and is essentially raw brass.  

This is a somewhat rare late pre-war model.   The Super was introduced in 1937, so this trumpet was made in the first few years of production.

These pre-war Supers are considered some of the best trumpets Olds ever made. 

This is a lightweight horn, weighing only  33.6 ounces, as light or lighter than most Schilke, Calicchio and French Besson trumpets.

The early Olds literature indicated that the Super was made only in one bore size, but then several bore sizes were made... M, LM, LLM and SYM.  Although this trumpet does not have a bore designation, it is a .464 bore, which is quite unusual.  

Shortly after this horn was made,  Olds standardized future Supers with a .460 ML Bore.

This trumpet clean inside and out.  All slides are smooth.   

Engraving is sharp and clear.  Matching serial numbers on the valve spring barrels, valve stems and top caps.  

The valve plating on this trumpet appears to be original.   The compression is very good.  There is a small ding in the first slide piston, which is circled in the photos.  It does not appear to have any impact on the valve action or compression, so thankfully some past mishap did not result in the piston having any areas that cause an issue.  

There are a few small dings in the leadpipe and also a small one in the top of the tuning slide crook.    There are no signs of any major dent or solder repairs.

It did not come to us with a case, but we have a very nice vintage case that fits a Super very well, so this makes a great pairing.
